How to Choose Acne Treatment Products that Produce Results, Not Frustration

Acne is a skin ailment that can cause much more than just unsightly blemishes. It can have drastic effects on one’s self esteem and feelings of self worth. Acne is just not a teenage problem, either.

Although most individuals begin suffering from acne during their teenage years, many individuals continue to suffer from this embarrassing skin ailment throughout the better part of their lives.

Unfortunately, doctors have yet to find a magic pill to cure acne. However, there are a number of highly effective acne treatment products that can manage acne and clear up the skin on the face and body.

There are a number of myths that have been dispelled, including the fact that your diet affects acne. This couldn’t be further from the truth, as acne is a direct result of hormonal changes. It is also untrue that you need to scrub your face to clear up acne. Instead, most dermatologists will tell you that scrubbing your face with harsh soaps and acne treatments will do little more than further irritate the skin and promote breakouts.

With that said, there are many acne treatment products that have been shown to be highly effective at treating everything from mild to severe cases of acne.
Over-the-Counter Acne Treatment Products
If you have mild acne, you may choose to try one of the many over-the-counter acne treatment products. These include:

• Antibacterial Cleansers – Many of the antibacterial cleansers are quite effective at killing the bacteria on the skin that cause acne. However, they tend to dry out the skin, so use these acne treatment products sparingly until you see how your skin reacts.

• Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid – Both benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are popular over-the-counter acne treatment products that come in different forms, including creams, lotions and cleansers. The work by clearing clogged pores and removing excess oil, both of which often contribute to acne.
Prescription Acne Treatment Products
If you have moderate to severe acne, or if you find that over-the-counter acne treatment products are not effective at clearing up your acne then you may want to consider visiting a dermatologist who can prescribe a number of prescription acne treatment products based on your acne and skin type.
Prescription acne treatment products include:

• Retinoids – Retinoids are common prescription acne treatment products that facilitate the shedding of skin cells.

• Topical and oral antibiotics – For those individuals with severe acne that does not respond well to other treatments, topical and oral antibiotics may be prescribed for a specific length of time. They work by killing the bacteria that causes acne.

• Oral Contraceptives – Oral contraceptives have been found to be helpful in the treatment of acne for many women, as they decrease the amount of male hormones in the body.

• Accutane – Perhaps the strongest prescription medication available, Accutane is only prescribed for the most severe cases of acne. This drug can cause serious side effects and should only be taken under the watchful eye of a dermatologist. For more info on Acne please visit
